Letter from the President

Greetings Kansas SWANA members,

The Chapter Board of Directors is looking forward to seeing you next week at the 2019 Kansas Solid Waste Management Conference and Operator Training Course. The conference will be held on October 1st through the 3rd at the Kansas Star Conference Center located at 777 Kansas Star Drive in Mulvane. With October as National Fire Prevention Month, the conference will focus on fires and their impact on solid waste management. Our keynote speaker, Todd Thalhamer, has a wealth of experience with fires including being the area commander of the Paradise, California fire disaster. The conference includes four technical tracks with a variety of presentations to choose from, a large exhibitor area with indoor heavy equipment displays, and fun networking events in the evenings. As part of the conference festivities, there will be a Sporting Clays Event on October 1st which is a great opportunity to network and win prizes. If you have not yet registered for the conference, register online TODAY!

In conjunction with the Kansas Solid Waste Management Conference and Operator Training Course this year, the SWANA Kansas Sunflower Chapter is offering a Manager of Landfill Operations (MOLO) training course. The MOLO course takes place at the Kansas Star Conference Center beginning on Sunday, November 29th and concludes with an exam on Wednesday, October 2nd. The MOLO course provides a comprehensive study of efficient landfill operations, including site design, compliance with regulations, and issues to consider when planning, operating, and closing landfills.

The SWANA Kansas Sunflower Chapter and the KDHE Bureau of Waste Management would like to thank all the exhibitors, sponsors, and speakers of the conference! The conference Platinum Level exhibitors/sponsors are Armor Equipment, Autocar, Downing Sales & Service, Elliot Equipment, and Foley Equipment. Thank you!

It has been a busy year for the Chapter Board of Directors, and I appreciate the tremendous support each of them gives to our organization. Thank you to Phil, John, Mike, Craig, Kyle, Steve and Wally for your time and dedication to the SWANA Kansas Sunflower Chapter!

Kansas SWANA Roundtable Meetings

Every year the SWANA Kansas Sunflower Chapter coordinates with several host cities to conduct Solid Waste Management Roundtable Meetings throughout the state. This year we hosted a roundtable meeting in Wichita on March 6th and one in Leavenworth on June 12th. Thank you to the hosts and attendees for participating in these meetings!

There is one more Solid Waste Management Roundtable Meeting scheduled this year. It will take place in Great Bend on November 6th.

SWANA Solid Waste Roundtable Meeting details:

Date: Wednesday, November 6, 2019

Time: 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM

Location: Barton County Landfill Training Facility, 396 NE 30th Road, Great Bend

A SWANA membership is not required for attendance and there is no charge. However, space may be limited. Therefore, to properly prepare for the meeting, we need an approximate head count by Monday, November 4th. If you and/or your staff plan to attend this meeting, please R.S.V.P. by emailing Steve Linehan at [email protected].

This is a great opportunity for you to join government and private solid waste management officials to discuss similar interests and/or concerns that affect your community and the services you provide. In addition, it is a chance to network with others, discover new solutions to old problems, and share your own expertise with the group. The moderator will help guide the discussion around whichever topics the group feels are most important. General topics for discussion could include: Recycling Programs, Collection Operations, Landfill Operational Issues, Composting Operations, Household Hazardous Waste Facilities, Vehicle Maintenance / Fuel Issues, Safety and Training Programs, Public Education Programs, Compliance and Regulatory Agency Standards, State and/or National Legislation, Community Relations / Customer Service, and open forum decided by participants at the meeting.
